This amazing symbol of the eternal city was built two thousand years ago, it is the most popular monument in the city, drawing thousands of tourists .This amphitheater was used as the scene of struggles of gladiators, spectacles with wild beasts and even naval battles, because the Coliseum had a system which transformed the arena in a large lake.It was built with marble, tile, tuff and travertina stone. It was so huge, that it was capable to receive nine thousand spectators
       It was destroyed by an  earthquake in the beginning of the 5th century and later restored. In the 13th century, was used as the military fortress. Between the 15th and 16th centuries has been the target of looters, who led a good part of valuable materials of construction .It was elected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the world in 2007, and it is one of the most popular places in Italy.
